Obviously's Retro Game Commentary

It's been a while and I've been pretty bored so I started on a new project. I'm doing some retro game commentaries on Youtube, just for fun. I'm not really concerned if anybody watches them or not but if you've got nothing better to do why not take a look!

About the language thing in Japan: You can definitely get by in Japan without Japanese, it just kind of sucks. It is HARD sometimes and can feel very isolated, but plenty of English teachers do it.

At my school all the staff speak English (they are all English teachers after all) and a lot of the kids' parents have at least basic English. Japanese people learn English at school so they have some basics but will hardly ever try to speak it, and their listening comprehension isn't usually good because the school English is almost all out of textbooks. I was told to carry a notepad and pen around and write things down for Japanese people because their reading comprehension is often much better. I haven't tried this yet though.

I don't know how good my Japanese will become after living here. I desperately want to learn, but it's difficult and I don't have a lot of time for lessons or studying. Honestly I haven't yet found the language barrier to be a huge problem yet. Miming and making exaggerated expressions can go a long way.

I thought of you today: I found a huge gaming shop near where I live and it had a load of second-hand games (they MUST have been second hand, but they were packaged up as-new) for Super Famicom, Gameboy, Sega Genesis, PS and others. Seeing the Snes cartridges was such a blast of nostalgia, because mine has been packed away for years. Super Metroid memories.
